Ipe Rooftop Deck Bob is up on the roof of the Waterfront Warehouse Rehab project building to observe the deck installation. The hardwood deck uses a sustainable tropical hardwood decking called Ipe, pronounced "I-Pay." The wood is so hard that conventional nailing is not an option. The contractors must first drill a hole through the decking into to the pressure treated support structure. Then coated exterior screws are then countersunk to secure the decking. The joists for the decking are pressure treated and shimmed with Cedar. The deck is stepped onto two levels to allow a slope.
